What is Filament Winding?

Filament winding is a highly automated composite manufacturing process in which continuous fibres typically glass, carbon or aramid are wound onto a rotating mandrel in precise geometric patterns. The fibres are impregnated with resin either before winding (wet winding) or in advance (pre-preg winding), and once cured, the mandrel is removed to leave a hollow, high-strength composite structure. The process is widely used to produce cylindrical and pressure-bearing components such as pipes, pressure vessels, rocket motor casings, storage tanks and aerospace structures wherever high strength-to-weight ratio and dimensional precision are critical.

How Does the Filament Winding Process Work?

The filament winding process follows a precise sequence controlled by CNC software:

  1. Mandrel Setup — A mandrel (the mould) is mounted on the winding machine spindle and set to rotate at a controlled speed.
  2. Fibre Feed — Continuous fibre rovings are fed from a creel through a resin bath (in wet winding) and onto a delivery eye that moves along the mandrel axis.
  3. Winding Pattern — The CNC controller coordinates mandrel rotation and delivery eye movement to lay fibres at precise angles — helical, hoop or polar — depending on the structural requirements of the part.
  4. Layer Build-Up — Multiple layers are wound at varying angles to achieve the required wall thickness and mechanical properties.
  5. Curing — The wound part is cured in an oven or at room temperature, depending on the resin system used.
  6. Mandrel Extraction — Once cured, the mandrel is removed, leaving the finished composite component.

Types of Filament Winding

There are three primary winding patterns used in filament winding manufacturing:

  • Helical Winding — Fibres are wound at an angle between 5° and 85° to the mandrel axis. This is the most versatile pattern and is used for most cylindrical components requiring balanced axial and hoop strength.
  • Hoop Winding — Fibres are wound at approximately 90° to the mandrel axis, providing maximum hoop (circumferential) strength. Often used in combination with helical winding.
  • Polar Winding — Fibres pass over the ends of the mandrel in a longitudinal pattern. Used primarily for closed-end pressure vessels such as gas cylinders and rocket casings.
