Buying a CNC machine is a significant investment. Whether you are purchasing your first filament winding machine or adding capacity to an existing composite manufacturing line, the manufacturer you choose will affect your production quality, your operational costs and your ability to get support when things go wrong β for the next 15 to 20 years.
So how do you choose? Here are five things every buyer should evaluate before placing an order β whether you're comparing international suppliers or specifically vetting CNC machine manufacturers in India.
1. Do They Actually Understand Your Application?
This is the most important question, and it is the one most buyers skip.
There is a big difference between a CNC machine manufacturer who builds general-purpose CNC equipment and one who specialises in the specific type of machine you need. For composite manufacturing β filament winding machines, CNC winding systems, equipment for FRP pipes and pressure vessels β the manufacturer needs to understand not just CNC engineering but composite manufacturing itself.
That means understanding fibre mechanics, resin systems, mandrel design, winding pattern optimisation and the structural requirements of composite components. A manufacturer who cannot talk fluently about winding angles, fibre tension, layer sequencing and curing cycles is probably not the right partner for a filament winding machine purchase.
Ask for case studies and references from customers who produce similar components. If they cannot provide them, treat that as a red flag.
2. Is Installation and Commissioning Included?
A CNC machine is not a piece of off-the-shelf equipment that you plug in and start using. It is a precision system that needs to be installed correctly, calibrated for your specific mandrel sizes and production requirements, and validated before you can run production.
Some CNC machine manufacturers quote a filament winding machine price that looks attractive, then charge separately for installation, commissioning and training β or simply do not offer it at all. The right approach is to look for manufacturers who include full installation and commissioning in the supply package and will not sign off the machine until it has been validated on your actual production components.
3. How Good Is Their Software Support?
Modern CNC winding machines are only as good as the software used to generate and optimise the winding programs. Winding path software β tools like CADFIL β translates your component design into the axis motion commands that the machine executes. Getting this right for complex components requires both good software and a supplier who knows how to use it.
Ask what winding software the manufacturer supports, whether they can help you generate and validate winding programs for your specific components, and whether software updates and support are included in the supply agreement.
4. What Does After-Sales Support Look Like?
The conversation about after-sales support happens before the purchase. That is when you have the most leverage.
Ask specifically: What is your response time for technical support? Do you hold spare parts in stock in India, or do they have to be imported? Do you have field service engineers who can visit our site? What is covered under warranty and for how long?
A CNC winding machine will be in your production line for a long time. The cost of unplanned downtime can far exceed the initial price difference between a machine with poor support and one with strong after-sales capability.
5. Can They Show You Their Work?
Reputable CNC machine manufacturers should be able to show you machines they have installed and customers who will talk to you about their experience. Ask to see examples of past filament winding machine installations and, if at all possible, ask for a site visit to an existing installation. There is no better way to evaluate a machine β and its manufacturer β than to see it running production components in a real factory.
At CNC Technics, we welcome prospective customers to visit our facility and, where possible, to visit existing customer sites. We believe our machines and our track record speak for themselves. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
